ALBANY -- A mother of five used $100,000 in welfare benefits she wasn't entitled to fund her lifestyle, Albany County prosecutors charged Wednesday.

Angela Lopez, 36, worked as a home health aide while she pocketed the taxpayer money between May 2005 and April 2009, prosecutors said.

Elizabeth's miscellaneous topics: Captain Mathew Stamford, needs help with $2,000,000 to be moved in Afghanistan - Watch the Scam play out (PART 8)

Well after not hearing anything back from the scammer, I decided to email the Stamford address and see what he had to say, here is the email I sent.

Dear Captain Stamford,

I am sorry it has taken me a little while to respond, my health has not been well the past few days, that is what you get with old age. I am sorry to hear about your accident and hope all is well. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and the other men that where involved in the bomb explosion. Which arm did the one soldier lose?

I sent the tag to the UN office, but like I stated before, I cannot Western Union the money without going unnoticed. I live in a very small community, and what ever I do is reported back to my son who is in control of my estate. I hope this goes well, my grandson would be so suprised, he just started attending college and needs money for book.

He responded back with this following email:

The soldier lost the left arm which was infact his more dominant arm. I really do not see anything abnormal in sending money through a western union within your town, however, if it really will not be possible for you, you could take a trip to the next town's and have it done there. Please this delat is not very adviceable.

It doesn't seem as if I will be able to get an address out of him. I am undecided as to whether end the correspondence and tell him what I really think, or just try one more email. What are your thoughts? Would you try to get an email address one more time or should a piece of your mind email suffice? Please comments are appreciated.

Elizabeth's miscellaneous topics: Captain Mathew Stamford, needs help with $2,000,000 to be moved in Afghanistan - Watch the Scam play out (PART 7)

This past Friday, the scammer responded to my email, on the John Ruggie end of the scam, with the following information on how to send the money via Western Union, here is the email:

UNITED NATIONS DIPLOMATIC UNIT

Now I did not want to jump at the email and respond, so I mulled over it over the weekend, I just how to possibly respond to this. I than got this response from the Captain Stamford side of the scam:

I am shocked at this development however, you will write the UN office and let them know you have contacted the Military base and was given this code as proof that the packages were tagged (KABUL_STsgBLAKE_1234900-0092130)

I narrowly escaped a bomb explosion, am a bit injured but it will be fine, five of my men were also wounded, one has got his arm amputated.

I will try to see what else I can do from here but just in case the UN insists there is a problem with the code, try to see if the fee is negotiable then forward it to him but be sure to remind him of a quick delivery.

Please get back to me as soon as possible.

Capt. Matthew Stamford

How humorous how he went from one topic to another about a bomb, lol.

So here is my email to the John Ruggie side of the scam:

Dear Mr. Ruggie,

Here is the following tag that is needed to send me the package, KABUL_STsgBLAKE_1234900-0092130. Thank you for your time and patience, I will be awaiting on the arrival of my package.

Sincerely,
Elizabeth Nesbitt

The scammer emailed me back with a response to yesterday's email, here it is:

please just confirm from him how you could send the money to him. There is no way I could possibly make the money reach him from here. Please do this quickly.

Dear Captain Stamford,
I received an email from John Ruggie stating that he needs 535 pounds ($852 us dollars) before delivering the two packages. I am unsure how to send this money since he did not supply an address. I was just wondering if there was any way that you could take my share of the money from one of the boxes so that you could pay Mr. Ruggie. Otherwise, would it be safer that I send you the money so that we can be assured that he gets it?
Please respond A.S.A.P, for he says I have three days or it will cost me 2 pounds a day.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Nesbitt

At the same time the Captain Stamford email came, so did the one from the John Ruggie which is identical to the one yesterday, but now it says two days instead of three.

So here is my response to the John Ruggie Email:

Dear Mr. Ruggie,
I will need a delivery address to where to mail the money to. This package is a suprise for my grandson and I cannot be detected sending money without being detected. My son always chaparones me to the grocery store and has complete control of my estate. I can mail the money in US dollars if that is feasable. Please contact me with a mailing address ASAP or I will assume the above address is the one to mail to. If I do not recieve a response by tomorrow morning, the money will be sent US postal service by late tomorrow morning.
Thank You

Elizabeth Nesbitt

Now to see what happens from here. I doubt that he will give me a postal address to send to but it's worth a shot. Comments and suggestions on what to mail him would be appreciated, what would you mail him if you where given the opportunity?

Well readers, here is the long awaited email asking for money. Our scammer is trying to get 535 pounds, that is about $852 american dollars in case you were not sure. So I responded with the bait, see below:

2010/10/28 John Ruggie

UNITED NATIONS DIPLOMATIC UNIT
3, WHITEHALL COURT
LONDON, SW1A 2EL
UNITED KINGDOM
Attention: Elizabeth Nesbitt, receiver's name has been verified however, we have observed that there is no evidence of a special military diplomatic delivery tag (SMDDT) assigned to be on the consignments. Without this tag, my office will not secure the release of the items to the delivery address for security reasons.
We therefore advice that you contact the USA Military Base in Afghanistan; informing them of this development.
In the event that you are unable to secure the tag, our legal department would secure it on your behalf however, you would be required to make a payment of 535.00 british pounds to the Finance Unit of the UN.
The tag also enables us process the delivery to you even without a valid form of identification
You will have 3 working days to provide this sum or the tag to avoid demurrage on your items which will attract a fee of 2 british pounds per day.
Be assured that once both consignments have been legally tagged my office will give approval for delivery to your designated address within 48 hours after payment.

Dear Mr. Ruggie,

I am a bit confused, how am I supposed to get the money to you? You say you need 535 pounds (approx. $852.00 us dollars), but you do not explain how I am to get this money to you. Do I mail it to the above address?

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Nesbitt

Than I decided to have even a little more fun and sent our scammer an email via his fake Captain Stamford email address.

Dear Captain Stamford,

Here is the latest update on our Scammer, Capt. Matthew Stamford:

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Stamford Matthew
Date: Tue, Oct 26, 2010 at 7:51 AM
Subject: Contact the UN office London
To: Elizabeth Nesbitt

Dear Elizabeth, your name has been tagged to the packages, identifying you as the Next of Kin to the late Staff Sgt and should arrive the UN office in London on Wednesday (October 27th, 2010). I have already gotten clearance for the packages to be moved from the diplomatic village.

You shall contact Mr. John Ruggie of the UN Diplomatic office in London right away through his email johnruggie@live.com informing him that you are to receive from Afghanistan personal effects of Late Staff Sgt. Richard A. Blakes which are two boxes as the executor of his last will and testament.

I will want to state again that the UN officials do not know the true content of the packages so your first job is to always keep it as that and you must also not make the mistake of disclosing my Identity, your source of information if you are asked is the Military base in Aghanistan.

The UN believes this packages are sent directly with other packages from our Military base camp out here in Afghanistan so all you need do is play along as the relative of late Staff Sgt. Richard A. Blakes.

AT THIS POINT I WILL NEED YOUR COMPLETE CONFIDENCE. IT WILL BE VERY DISHEARTENING TO HAVE PUT THIS MUCH EFFORT AND SEE IT ALL COME TO NOTHING. Please be as cooperative as possible with the UN to ensure the packages are delivered to you.

Once again I want to let you know, there would be no risk involved, I have taken care of all that there is.

Capt. Mathew Stamford

After a quick google search on John Ruggie, I found on Wikipedia that John Ruggie is actually a real person who is, in fact,  the Berthold Beitz Professor in Human Rights and International Affairs at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government and Affiliated Professor in International Legal Studies at Harvard Law School.

This is interesting, if the person is really a scammer, or could it be Professor Ruggie doing a study for class?  Maybe a student chose him?

Also, I did a search for Carolyn Carter via the first original email.  The first email came from a Carolyn Carter at a odu.edu address.  A google search for odu.edu let me know that this was for a college in Norfolk Virgina called Old Dominion University.  Next I searched for "Carolyn Carter Old Dominion University" and found a Carolyn Carter on Linkedld who is from Norfold Virgina and attended Old Dominion University....interesting.

Elizabeth's miscellaneous topics: Captain Mathew Stamford, needs help with $2,000,000 to be moved in Afghanistan - Watch the Scam play out (PART 2)

I recieved a response back from the "Fake" Matthew Stamford. Here is what he has said:

I have arranged with Mr. Baldewin (the German diplomat) to have the packages covered with a special diplomatic seal, this will prevent the customs from conducting any scan or search on the packages hence, the true content will remain undetected while on transit.

I have not and will not disclose the content to even Mr. Baldewin, I am simply taking advantage the immunity he has, to beat the unusually tight security we have here in Kabul. The packages will arrive at the UN office in London from where it becomes very easy delivering it to your address.

You will get 30% for your effort that will put the value of your share at $600,000. If that is ok, you will send to me, your preferred delivery information (name, contact address, Telephone number) in your next mail to me. The detail will be tagged to the packages before airlifting and of course I need to know how to reach you when I am discharged. I shall send you further information once I have received your next reply. Do take care of yourself and a line of prayer for those of us at war.

Capt. Matthew Stamford

I responded to his email with an address that is fake along with the phone number. Of course giving a stranger over then internet your address is not very smart, who knows who might show up at your house to cause some real dangerous damage! What amazes me is that people actually think this kind of thing still works. I am still trying to figure out what the point of this game is, does he want to steal my idenity? Maybe he is going to ask for money? Although, he claims that he has 2,000,000 so asking for that seems a bit odd, so maybe if he does ask for money so he can ship it and pay off the so called German diplomat I can just simply tell him to take it out of my 30%...LOL!

I really appreciate your reply I got your mail off the internet with the help of a specialised email extracting device used by the US military and I am trained to understand that at certain situations, one could be compelled to trust a stranger, rather than a close friend or family. A stranger generally tries to earn your trust and would have your best interest at heart.

This money wasn’t stolen, usually we find things like this but we are usually compelled to burn and bury but we didn’t this time.  My colleague successfully transferred his share out to the UK I
intended to use his contact but he was killed last month in a bomb attack so I had to take my chance on you. I have no intention of asking for your bank information, Social security

number or anything that may compromise this relationship.

I was born at Cherry Point Washington in 1970, a fourth generation Officer. I grew up in Springfield, Virginia and attended the University of Virginia on a NROTC scholarship. I also have a Chief Information Officer (CIO) and a CNSS 4011 Information Assurance (IA) Certificate. I am 5'11", very fit, muscular and have black hair. I am very good with my hands and considered by many as a good carpenter, I love building stuffs and I am thinking of establishing a small furniture company when I retire. It is fun getting paid for playing around cause that’s what our hobbies are like to us, "Play"

Now back to the business at hand. I have packaged the money as personal belongings of a fallen soldier; it shall be transported to the UN office in London along with other military packages going to various destinations from where it would eventually be delivered to you. You shall stand in as the next of kin of this fallen soldier (Staff Sergeant Richard Blakes) which is stated clearly in the DD form 93. I have the cooperation of a German diplomat (Mr. Baldewin), he has been transferred to the UK and will be carrying the packages under diplomatic seals and cover. I have given him a "secret payoff" he shall have no problems going through customs as a diplomat and like I said, the packages will be covered with a certain seal that will prevent the customs from going through its content.

I will give you more information and the terms when I get your reply which will also mean you are willing to do this.  Warm regards to your family, have a blessed day.

Respectfully,

Capt Matthew Stamford

Here is my response to the email:

Dear Captain Stamford,
This sounds so exciting, what can I do to help? I of course am leary about the danger, but also very excited about seeing such a large sum of money! I am waiting on your response, please write back soon.

Yours Truely,Beth

The emails are differant, the first being from a college email obviously, the second is a yahoo email, "Scam" written all over it, but what the heck, lets have some fun.  Stay tuned!

RARE Taliban Video Fighters 'Behind The Mask'

In the video 'Behind the Mask,' broadcast by SBS Australia, Noreigan journalist Paul Refsdal spent weeks in Kabul convincing a "high-ranking commander" named Dawran to take him (and his camera) to a Taliban camp in the mountains.

"I just had to trust them," Refsdal says.

Refsdal shows how nerve-wracking the situation was initially. He captures three armed soldiers mutter in Arabic, "He'll shit himself, he's so scared of us... just like we are of his bald head."

Refsdal interviews soldiers, parents and children about their daily lives and thoughts of the war. He captures scared soldiers comforting each other with prayer, cracking jokes, and in one scene, the commander flipping out at the sound of a U.S. "transport plane converted into a gunship." Refsdal is kidnapped (or saved, depending on one's point of view) when the soldiers suddenly come under fire from U.S. soldiers.
